sodium thiosulphate reacts instantly with chlorine to form
chloride ions, which is
completely removed. If chloramine is present, chloramine will be broken down into ammonia.
(Remember that chloramine = chlorine+ammonia).
Note: Sodium Thiosulphate will remove oxygen from the water,
therefore make sure the water is well aerated.
When sodium thiosulphate neutralises chloramine,
the ammonia released into the water may increase toxic ammonia levels if the pH of water is above 7.
If pH of water is below 7, the ammonia released will be
in the less toxic form.
